skin weft

Skin wefts are one of the easiest types of hair extension to apply and last from four to eight weeks. A weft consists of individual hairs attached along a polyurethane strip. The strip is glued to your scalp between layers of your real hair, creating a fake layer of hair that is undetectable. Wefts can create length and volume.

  • Step 1

Determine where you will apply the weft extensions. First separate the "red zone"--the top layer of your hair, where the wefts should never be placed. This will ensure that your wefts are undetectable. Place a pointer finger in front of each ear. Move your fingers up, separating the hair in front of your fingers along the way. Once your fingers touch at the top of your head, gather all of the hair you've accumulated and clip it in place on top of your head.

  • Step 2

Start weft application from the bottom, working your way up. Leave a layer of hair about 1 inch thick at the very base of your scalp. Use the pick side of a comb to part a straight line horizontally across your head. Tie or clip away the hair above so that you can easily access the part you've created. You will place the weft within the part, directly onto the visible portion of the scalp.

  • Step 3

Cut your weft to size. Usually the polyurethane strip that attaches the hair to your scalp is a couple of feet long, so you can adjust the length accordingly. With scissors, cut the weft to the length of the part you've created, leaving about half an inch on either side of the weft.

  • Step 4

Apply hair glue to the polyurethane strip. Place the cut-to-size weft on a flat surface. Place the side of the polyurethane strip that has no hair facing up. Squeeze the glue bottle to apply a consistent line of glue from one side of the polyurethane strip to the other.

  • Step 5

Using your thumb and pointer finger, hold the polyurethane strip from each side. Place one side of the glued strip directly onto your scalp, about a half inch in from the end of your part. Hold the edge that you've attached firmly as you slowly place the remainder of the weft along your part. Once the length of the weft is set, apply pressure along the entire strip for 10 to 15 seconds to secure the glue.

  • Step 6

Repeat these steps until you have applied wefts to the remainder of your hair. If you're adding length, apply the wefts an inch apart. If you're just going for volume, apply a weft every 2 to 4 inches: The more wefts, the more volume. Let the glue dry 10 to 15 hours before brushing.
